drummer

Drumming isn’t just good for your rhythm — it’s great for your creativity and mental agility. It stimulates both sides of the brain, enhancing memory, coordination, concentration, and emotional release.

As students build their foundations, the drum kit becomes a powerful tool for self-expression. Whether exploring jazz, rock, funk or pop, drumming encourages experimentation and helps each player develop their own musical style.

Along the way, every breakthrough: mastering a tricky groove, nailing a fill, or finishing a full song builds real confidence. It’s a journey that fosters not just musical growth, but personal growth too.

And because drums often sit at the heart of group playing, students also develop valuable communication and teamwork skills both behind the kit and beyond it.

Why a drum lesson? Why with me?

Drumming is a physical art. The way you move directly affects your sound and understanding that connection can transform your playing. It’s not just about hitting the drums, but how you hit them.

By learning to control your motion, you unlock a wider range of sounds, dynamics, and tonalities. You begin to choose the right movement for the right sound, allowing your playing to adapt expressively to the musical context.

Being aware of posture and movement also helps avoid tension and long-term strain. With proper technique and warm-ups, drumming can actually enhance flexibility and support joint mobility. In my teaching, I stay mindful of ergonomic awareness — not only to optimise performance, but to keep drumming sustainable, safe, and enjoyable for years to come.

Learning the drums is about far more than just hitting things in time. It’s about expression, communication, and finding your voice behind the kit. My teaching philosophy is built on the belief that every student is unique, and every lesson should be too.

I aim to create a supportive and inspiring environment where students can build a strong foundation, grow in confidence, and explore their creativity.

There’s no one-size-fits-all method when it comes to learning music. I personalise each lesson to suit the student's age, ability, goals, and musical tastes. Whether you're preparing for exams, wanting to join a band, or just playing for the joy of it, our sessions will reflect what motivates and excites you.

While every student is different, I believe in guiding drummers through a clear path of progress, starting with strong fundamentals, then gradually introducing more complex musical ideas, and eventually encouraging full creative freedom.

Some students thrive on structure, while others need a more intuitive, feel-based approach. I adapt my teaching style to match your pace, learning style, and musical goals — whether that means breaking things down slowly or diving deep into improvisation, groove, or specific genres like funk, rock, or jazz.

This flexible, student-led progression ensures that learning remains exciting, challenging, and personally meaningful..

Creativity, Confidence & Cognitive Growth

Drumming is about technique but also about feel, groove, and connection. In my teaching, I combine:

  • Solid technical foundations with exercises tailored to your level.

  • Music theory to deepen your understanding and vocabulary.

  • Musical context, playing along to real tracks and working with drum-less songs.

  • Improvisation and creativity, so you can truly express yourself

  • Band dynamics and collaboration, to help you play well with others.

As a working drummer, I’ve had the chance to perform live and in the studio with a wide range of artists, both locally and internationally. These experiences have taught me the value of listening, adaptability, and playing with intention — lessons I bring into my teaching every day.

Equally important has been the influence of my own mentor, Jean Brissard, during my years studying at the Agostini Drum School. His teaching philosophy continues to shape the way I approach both drumming and teaching — placing focus on sound, disciplined practice, and the pursuit of growth. That mentorship helped me evolve not only as a musician, but as an educator.

My aim isn’t just to pass on technical skills, but to inspire and motivate students to shape their own sound, develop their identity behind the kit, and explore the incredible potential and versatility the drums have to offer.

**“At his very centre, Raoul is a natural teacher both in a musical sense and as an individual.

I first met him while filming a documentary about up-and-coming bands, and over time our relationship evolved from professional to personal, as friends and now with Raoul as my drum teacher.

As a teacher, Raoul is intuitive and adaptable. He designs lessons that align with my goals while introducing ideas I didn’t even realise I needed. Whether we’re breaking down a song or working on a technical concept, he integrates musicality, movement, and awareness into the process in a way that always feels connected and purposeful.

He’s thoughtful, honest, and passionate —someone who makes you want to do your best, because he always gives you his best.”**

**“Raoul Khayat is a force of nature. He is both artistic and methodical in his approach to music. His insight into what a track needs is profound, and his arrangement skills are without boundaries.

Raoul's focus is extremely sharp, and he always takes our music to another level. I feel very lucky to have met him both as a brother and an inspirational musician.

He became irreplaceable quite quickly playing for Shackle Free with his broad freedom of playing through different styles and genres along with his total dedication to create.”**
